Send a reference: how we match an editing style
Want your video edited like one you've seen? Send the link, the timestamps that show the style, and a line on what to copy: pacing, captions, color, music or graphics. Your editor studies the reference and matches its cadence, color and motion style in the first cut. Most clients land on a consistent style within 2–3 videos.
Updated
Reference-first is how buyers already brief us. In a review of 698 recent first messages from buyers, 55% included a link to a video or asked for something "like this". Reference videos tell an editor pacing, tone, color and energy faster than any written brief.
What should I send with my reference?
- 2–3 reference links, each with timestamps. "0:00–0:45: match this cold open" beats a bare URL.
- What to copy from each. Pacing and cut rhythm, caption style, color, music, graphics or b-roll density. Be specific.
- What not to copy. "No jump cut every two seconds" saves a revision round.
- Your raw footage and a length target, with a floor and a ceiling.
- Your brand kit: fonts, HEX colors, logo and any lower-third or intro files.
- The platform: YouTube, Reels, TikTok, Shorts or all of them.
Everything above fits on one page: use the free video editing brief template.
How does style matching work?
- Break the reference down. Your editor watches the reference and writes down what makes it work: the hook, cut rhythm, caption style, color, music and graphics.
- Check it against your footage. Editing choices transfer; camera, lighting and location don't. Anything your footage can't support is flagged before the first cut.
- Build the first cut to that style sheet. Your first cut lands within 5–7 days of a complete brief; most projects deliver in 3–4.
- Tune it with timestamped notes. Revision rounds turn around in 24–72 hours, typically 2–3 rounds for most edits.
- Reuse it. The style sheet is saved as your brand profile, so the next video starts where this one finished.
A style-sheet example
This is what a reference turns into. Example for a fictional channel; yours is written from your references and first-cut notes.
| Element | Example entry |
|---|---|
| References | Video A 0:00–0:45 for cold-open energy; Video B 2:10–3:00 for caption style |
| Hook | Open on the result, title card at 0:08, no logo intro |
| Pacing | A cut every 2–4 seconds in the first minute, slower in story sections |
| Captions | Word-by-word, white with one brand-blue highlight word, lower third, inside safe zones |
| Color | Warm, slightly lifted blacks; skin tones matched across both cameras |
| Music | Upbeat instrumental under talking; music drops out on punchlines |
| Graphics | Brand-kit lower-thirds; zoom punch-ins on key lines only |
| B-roll | A cutaway within 3 seconds of every claim or product mention |
| Don't | No whoosh on every cut, no stock footage of handshakes |
| Deliverables | 16:9 master, three 9:16 clips, SRT captions file |
Three different styles from our portfolio
A talking-head video with stock b-roll, a van-life vlog and a reaction format: three references that would produce three different style sheets. See more on our portfolio.
Reference videos: frequently asked questions
Yes. Send the link, the timestamps that show the style and a line on what to copy: pacing, captions, color, music or graphics. We study reference videos and match cadence, color and motion style in your first cut, then tune it through the revision rounds. Most clients land on a consistent style within 2–3 videos.
Two or three is the sweet spot. One reference tells us a single look; two or three show what they have in common, which is the style you actually want. Add timestamps and a note on what to take from each, plus anything you don't want copied.
We match the editing, not the camera. Cut rhythm, captions, graphics, music and color treatment transfer to any footage; the lens, lighting and location of the original don't. If a reference relies on something your footage can't give, we flag it before the first cut rather than after.
We can match the editing approach: pacing, caption style, sound design, graphics and color. We don't reuse another creator's footage, music, logos or branded assets. The result reads like the same school of editing while staying your video, built from your footage and your brand.
Describe the feel in plain words (clean, engaging, cinematic, professional), name the platform, and point to anything on our portfolio you like; it's organized by format and industry. That works as a reference. After the first cut, your timestamped notes set the style for every video that follows.
Yes. We keep a brand profile for repeat clients, so every video is consistent without re-briefing from scratch. On a monthly plan you also keep a dedicated editor who learns your style, brand and recurring assets.
