The Short Answer: Animated Explainer Video Cost

A 60-second animated explainer video costs about $200–$400 from a Fiverr freelancer, according to Fiverr's 2026 animation cost guide. A fixed-price explainer studio like Wyzowl starts at $2,500, and custom animation studios average $8,000–$30,000 (Yum Yum Videos). When Wyzowl asked 242 studios to price the same 60-second explainer, the 116 that quoted had a median of $5,400.

Those are market numbers, not ours: Mark Studios' own prices (monthly plans, or an instant quote for a single video) are on our pricing page, not here. Every figure links to the page that published it, checked October 11, 2026.

The range is wide because you aren't paying for seconds. You're paying for scenes that someone has to write, draw and then move, and each route does a different amount of that work for you.

Two details are easy to miss. Epipheo's page also sets a $15K minimum for a production engagement, so its $5K starter tier isn't the whole story. And Wyzowl's survey is older than the rest: it ran in late 2022, recorded the top of any range a studio gave, and found quotes from $600 to $250,000, with an average of $8,457 once the top and bottom 5% were dropped (Wyzowl's explainer cost survey). Wyzowl sells explainers itself, which is worth knowing when you read it.

Hiring an animator in-house is the other route. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median for special effects artists and animators at $102,030 a year, or $49.06 an hour (May 2025), before benefits. That's near the top of Fiverr's hourly band, and it only pays off with a steady stream of videos. Our motion graphics statistics page has the full pay distribution.

Why the Style Sets the Price

Five animation styles in rising order of cost: motion graphics, template characters, custom illustration, custom characters, and 3D animation. Fiverr's guide puts flat motion graphics 30 to 50 percent below character-driven work and custom characters 40 to 70 percent above template ones; Epipheo prices 3D in its $75K+ tier.

Length matters less than people expect. Fiverr's guide says flat motion graphics run 30 to 50 percent cheaper than character-driven videos, and custom characters add 40 to 70 percent over template ones, because every character has to be designed and rigged before it can move. A template explainer there might cost $150; the same video with original illustrations, $400 to $600. At the top end, Epipheo puts 3D in its Cinematic tier, at $75K and up.

So before you compare quotes, check they price the same style. A $300 quote and a $20,000 quote for "a 60-second explainer" are rarely the same video. If you're unsure which style fits, our guide to when motion graphics earn their place covers the trade-off, and explainer vs demo vs customer story covers whether you need an explainer at all.

What Moves the Price

  1. Style. Motion graphics, then template characters, then custom illustration, custom characters and 3D, as above.
  2. Length. Epipheo estimates every 15 seconds adds roughly a week of animation work. On Fiverr, a 15-second logo animation runs $70–$120 and a two-minute commercial with custom characters $600–$1,200 or more.
  3. Voiceover. AI or stock voices are "near-free," per Epipheo; professional union voice talent runs $1,000–$5,000. Our post on AI voice cloning and synthetic narration covers when an AI voice is good enough.
  4. Revisions. Yum Yum Videos includes two feedback rounds; each extra round adds 8–12% at Epipheo. Fiverr's guide says unlimited-revision packages cost 25–40% more.
  5. Rush. Epipheo charges 25–50% above standard for rush work. Yum Yum Videos can rush too, but with fewer change rounds.
  6. The script. Wyzowl includes scriptwriting in its price. Fiverr's guide describes a standard freelance explainer as "script adaptation," which isn't the same as writing one from nothing, so a missing script is a hidden cost.

How to Get an Accurate Quote

Weeks from kickoff to delivery for an animated explainer, from each studio's own page: Epipheo's starter tier 4–6 weeks, Wyzowl about 6 weeks, Epipheo's signature tier 6–10 weeks, Yum Yum Videos 7–9 weeks, Demo Duck 6–12 weeks and Epipheo's cinematic tier 10–16 weeks.

Studios work in stages: script, then storyboard, then animation, with feedback at each, which is why Wyzowl quotes about six weeks. Send these with your first message and every quote you get back will price the same job:

  1. The goal and the placement. One sentence on what a viewer should do afterward, and where the video lives: homepage, ad, sales deck or onboarding.
  2. The length. Pick a target. Epipheo's packages are built on 30–60 and 60–120 seconds, and longer means more weeks.
  3. One reference video, with timestamps on the style you want. This decides the price more than anything else on the list.
  4. What you already have: a script, a voiceover, a logo file, brand colors and fonts.
  5. Your deadline. Say it up front, so a rush fee is quoted, not discovered.
  6. What's included: ask about script, storyboard, voiceover, music license, revision rounds, source files and extra aspect ratios for ads.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 60-second animated explainer video cost?

About $200 to $400 from a Fiverr freelancer, according to Fiverr's 2026 animation cost guide, and $2,500 and up at a fixed-price studio such as Wyzowl. Custom animation studios charge far more: Yum Yum Videos says its animated videos average $8,000 to $30,000, and Demo Duck prices a custom 2D video at $20,000 to $25,000. In Wyzowl's survey of 116 studio quotes, the median was $5,400.

Why are animated explainer videos so expensive?

Because every scene has to be written, drawn and then animated, and studios run those as separate stages with feedback at each. Wyzowl's all-inclusive price covers scripting, custom illustration, storyboarding, animation, professional voiceover, music and sound effects, and takes about six weeks. Custom characters cost more again: Fiverr's guide says they add 40 to 70 percent over template characters because each one has to be designed and rigged first.

How long does it take to make an animated explainer video?

Usually four to twelve weeks at a studio. Wyzowl quotes about six weeks for an animated explainer, Yum Yum Videos says most projects take seven to nine weeks, Demo Duck averages six to twelve, and Epipheo lists four to six weeks for its starter tier and ten to sixteen for 3D or cinematic work. Epipheo estimates that every extra 15 seconds adds roughly a week of animation.

Is a cheap Fiverr explainer video worth it?

It can be, if you know what the price buys. Fiverr's guide puts a 60-second explainer at $200 to $400 and a template-based one at about $150, while custom illustrations raise the same video to $400 to $600. Template work suits an internal or low-stakes video. For a homepage or a paid ad, compare quotes for the same style and check whether the script and voiceover are included.

Does an explainer video price include the voiceover and music?

It depends on who you hire, so ask. Wyzowl's price includes a professional voiceover, royalty-free music and sound effects. Epipheo's starter tier uses a stock or AI voice, and it puts professional union voice talent at $1,000 to $5,000 extra. Freelance packages vary, so check each package's description for the voice and the music license before you order.

Should I hire an in-house animator instead of a studio?

Only if you need animation every week. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay for special effects artists and animators at $102,030 a year, or $49.06 an hour, as of May 2025, before benefits and software. For a single explainer or a few a year, a freelancer or studio is cheaper, because you pay for the video rather than a full-time salary.

Is 2D or 3D animation cheaper for an explainer video?

2D is cheaper, and flat motion graphics are the cheapest form of it. Fiverr's guide says flat motion graphics run 30 to 50 percent below character-driven animation, while Epipheo prices 3D in its Cinematic tier, which starts at $75,000 and takes ten to sixteen weeks. Epipheo's cheaper starter and signature tiers are both 2D or motion graphics.
