The Short Answer: Can You Get a Videographer for Free?
Almost nobody films for free as a business, but in Palm Beach County free or nearly free video comes from four real places: film students at Palm Beach State College, FAU, Lynn University, Keiser University and Palm Beach Atlantic University; free library media labs where you film yourself; portfolio trades with new shooters; and skilled volunteers for nonprofits. Each one costs you something else: a fixed date, a deadline, the right to use the footage, or your own time.
People who type "free videographer near me" usually have a small budget and a real need: a fundraiser video, a first promo, a clip for social. This guide covers where free filming genuinely exists here, what it costs you in other ways, and when paying turns out cheaper. We film on location across the county ourselves and quote each shoot, so there is no Mark Studios price on this page, and no free offer we don't make.
Where Free Filming Comes From in Palm Beach County

| Source | What it costs you | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Film students | Expenses, credit and a copy for their reel | A promo or short with a flexible date | Semester schedules, no guaranteed deadline |
| Library media labs | Free with a library card | Interviews, green screen and voiceover you run yourself | You film and edit it yourself |
| Portfolio trades | Your time and usage terms | Creative or personal projects | Rights and quality vary; get it in writing |
| Skilled volunteers | Free for eligible nonprofits | A nonprofit story video | Long lead times, limited availability |
Film students and school programs
The Palm Beach County Film & Television Commission lists five local schools with film, television or media programs, and each one has students who need real projects:
- Palm Beach State College: an A.S. in Motion Picture Production Technology on the Lake Worth campus, where students crew productions and take internships "working with the local film industry".
- Florida Atlantic University: the Film & Media track of the Multimedia Studies B.A. in Boca Raton, with courses in filmmaking, editing, cinematography and sound.
- Lynn University: a B.F.A. in Film Production in Boca Raton.
- Keiser University: an A.A. and B.A. in Cinematic Arts at its West Palm Beach flagship campus, with access to the G-Star Studios sound stage.
- Palm Beach Atlantic University: a Cinema Arts B.A. in West Palm Beach, built around a Cinema Lab every semester.
Contact the program office or a faculty member, not random students, and pitch a project that fits coursework: a short documentary, a PSA or a commercial. Offer credit, travel and food, a copy for their reel, and a date range rather than one fixed day. The Commission's Student Showcase of Films shows the size of the pool: it is free to enter, has a Commercial PSA category, and drew 636 submissions from 95 schools in 2026. Students filming on public property apply through the Commission's student permitting process.
Film it yourself, free, at the library
- Palm Beach County Library System: CreationStation is a digital media lab and recording studio with iMacs running Premiere Pro, After Effects and Final Cut Pro, HD camcorders, a green screen, an LED light kit and a RØDE lavalier microphone. It is open to Palm Beach County residents 16 and up during library hours.
- Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach: the Technology & Innovation Center has film production, sound recording and editing stations. Cardholders 16 and up can book it for filming for up to four hours, setup included, with no more than six people in the room.
This is the route for a talking-head explainer, an interview or a voiceover. The gear stays in the room and you are the crew, so it suits a seated video, not an event.
Portfolio trades and skilled volunteers
A new shooter will sometimes film for free in exchange for footage for their reel. It works for creative projects, but for a business the catch is ownership: the person who films usually owns the copyright unless you both sign a written agreement that makes it a work made for hire, as the U.S. Copyright Office's Circular 30 explains. Get the usage terms in writing either way.
Registered nonprofits have one more route. Catchafire matches skilled volunteers with nonprofits, mostly through programs that foundations and companies fund. Expect a longer lead time than a paid booking.
What Free Filming Really Costs You

- The date. Students and volunteers fit you around classes and jobs. A gala, a launch or a ceremony can't move.
- The deadline. Without a contract, there's no delivery date and no recourse when it slips.
- The sound. A dull shot can often be rescued in the edit; muddy or echoing dialogue usually can't.
- Insurance and permits. A county permit for parks, beaches or streets is free, but it requires a $1 million general liability policy, which a hobbyist rarely carries.
- The rights. Without a written licence, you may not be able to run the video as an ad.
A 7-Point Checklist Before You Accept Free Filming
- Agree the deliverables in writing: length, horizontal and vertical versions, captions.
- Agree a delivery date, and what happens if it slips.
- Get a written licence for every use you plan (website, ads, social), with no expiry.
- Ask for the raw footage as well as the edit.
- Confirm a lavalier or shotgun microphone for anyone who speaks.
- Check permits and insurance if you're filming on public property.
- Watch two finished pieces they've made in a similar style.
When Paying a Professional Is Cheaper
Pay when the date can't move, when the video will carry money (an ad, a website hero, a sales page), when people speak on camera, or when you need every version fast. For context, Thumbtack puts the national average for hiring a videographer at $900–$1,025, and our Palm Beach County videographer cost guide lists published local rates by job. If you've already filmed on your phone, paying only for the edit costs less than a crew; our comparison of freelance marketplaces and agencies covers that route, and the freelancer, studio or marketplace guide covers hiring someone to film.
We've delivered 10,000+ projects for 4,500+ clients with a 4.9★ average, and a tight scope fixes a small budget better than going free: one location, one speaker, a 60-second cut and two vertical versions is a small shoot. Our Palm Beach County videography page shows how we film on location and edit in house, and our West Palm Beach production companies list compares local options with published prices.
Hiring in a specific town? Our local pages cover what we film there, venues and permits: West Palm Beach, Wellington, Lake Worth Beach, Boca Raton, Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens and Fort Lauderdale. Need photos instead? See our West Palm Beach photographer page.
The Bottom Line
A truly free videographer near you is usually a film student, a library lab you run yourself, a portfolio trade or a nonprofit volunteer. All four can work for a flexible, low-stakes video. When the date, the sound, the rights or the deadline matter, a paid shoot with a written scope is cheaper than redoing a free one.
