The Short Answer: What a Short Film Edit Costs

Editing a short film costs about $500 to $5,000 in 2026, depending on its length, the VFX, and how much sound and color work comes with the cut, according to Cine.Salon's video editing cost guide. On Fiverr, the 36 short film editing gigs on the first page of results start at $5 to $1,300, a median of $52.50. A film editor early in their career charges around $100 a day, per Careers in Film, and the median wage for US film and video editors is $36.26 an hour (BLS 2025 data on O*NET).

These are other companies' published figures, read October 25, 2026. Mark Studios quotes short film edits per project, so there's no Mark Studios price on this page. The range is wide because "editing a short film" covers three different purchases: a marketplace gig, a freelance film editor booked by the day, and a full post package that also covers the grade, the sound mix and the festival files. This guide prices all three. Documentaries are priced differently, and our documentary editing cost guide covers them.

Read the table with three caveats. A Fiverr starting price buys the seller's smallest package, and six more first-page gigs are pitched around AI-generated films rather than editing yours. Nine of the editing gigs start at $240 or more, and the top of that group promises a start-to-finish cut ($1,300), a feature film ($1,000) or a cut with grading and sound design ($505). Second, a staff wage isn't what a freelancer quotes. Freelancers price in the gaps between jobs, which our post on what salary data misses about an editor's quote explains.

Third, union scale only binds productions under a Guild agreement. The lowest Low Budget Theatrical tier on the Motion Picture Editors Guild rate card covers budgets above $3.3 million, so a short is almost always a negotiated rate. Careers in Film notes that freelance editors set their own day rate by experience and budget. For comparison, the Guild's Post Production Independents minimum for an on-call editor is $4,623.46 a week from August 2, 2026.

What a Festival Short Pays For After the Cut

The post-production bill for a festival short film, from published prices: edit to picture lock $500 to $5,000, color grade $500 to $2,000, sound design and mix starting at $350, a DCP for screenings $99 to $300, and a caption file at $4 a minute.

The edit is one line on the bill. A short headed for festivals also needs a grade, a finished mix and screening files, and each has its own market:

Caption file$4 a minute written from scratch, or $150 to build the timed-text track from your .srtCinematiq

At the low end of every line, a 10-minute festival short with a cut, a grade, a sound pass and a DCP comes to about $1,450, before music licensing. The top of the range is much higher, mostly because sound priced by the minute adds up fast.

You don't always need every line. A short going to YouTube or Vimeo needs no DCP, and a good edit already includes a balanced grade and a stereo mix. Our color grading cost guide covers when a separate colorist earns their rate. A festival or theatrical run is when the separate colorist, mixer and DCP house earn their fees.

How Long a Short Film Edit Takes

A short film's post-production schedule over six weeks: rough cut in weeks one and two, picture lock in week three, sound and color in week four, and final delivery in weeks five and six.

Most short films need four to six weeks of post-production, according to Indie Shorts Mag's 2026 guide. The rough cut takes weeks one and two, picture lock week three, sound and color week four, and delivery weeks five and six.

Time is part of the price. An editor on a day rate bills each of those days, and notes that reopen the cut after lock mean the colorist and the mixer redo their work too. Agree on how many rounds of notes come before lock; our guide to how many revision rounds to expect shows what is normal.

Before You Ask for a Short Film Editing Quote: A 6-Point Checklist

  1. Give the runtime and the footage total. The target length, the hours of footage, the number of cameras and the shooting days.
  2. Share the script and any assembly. Say whether the edit follows the script or has to find the story.
  3. List the deliverables. A festival screener, a DCP, a web master, a trailer, caption files.
  4. Say what has to be bundled. The grade, sound design and mix, music, and any VFX or composite shots.
  5. Fix the review rounds. How many rounds of notes come before picture lock, and what a later change costs.
  6. Settle the project files. Who keeps the timeline and the media after delivery. Our post on who owns your project files covers what to put in writing.

Where Mark Studios Fits

Mark edits story-driven video from the footage clients send: documentaries, vlogs, music videos and short films. He cuts to picture lock, then grades and mixes for web release and festival screeners. Story edits are a regular request: documentary or storytelling edits came up in 45 of 698 first messages from buyers to Mark Studios. What he doesn't sell is union feature editing, a 5.1 theatrical mix or DCP mastering. For those, book a Guild editor, a re-recording mixer and a DCP house like the ones above.

Mark Studios has delivered 10,000+ projects for 4,500+ clients across 8,000+ orders, with a 4.9★ average and 100M+ views generated. If you're choosing between a marketplace freelancer and a studio, our Fiverr vs Upwork vs agency comparison lays out the trade-offs.

The Bottom Line

Editing a short film costs about $500–$5,000 in 2026, from Fiverr gigs that start at $5 to freelance film editors who start around $100 a day. Union scale only applies to features under Guild agreements. A festival short also pays for a grade, a sound pass and a DCP, which comes to about $1,450 for a 10-minute film at the low end of every published price. Frequently asked questions

How much does a film editor charge per day?

Around $100 a day early in a career, according to Careers in Film, rising with credits and experience. Freelance film editors set their own day rate by experience and the production's budget. For reference, the median wage for US film and video editors is $36.26 an hour in BLS 2025 data, and the Editors Guild's 2026 minimum for an on-call editor on a low-budget union feature is $2,668.33 a week.

How much does it cost to edit a 10-minute short film?

Usually $500 to $5,000 for the edit itself, according to Cine.Salon's editing cost guide. A festival short also pays for finishing: a freelance grade runs $500–$2,000 for a short under 20 minutes, sound design and mix packages start around $350, and a DCP costs $10 a minute at Cinematiq. At the low end of every line, a 10-minute festival short comes to about $1,450 before music licensing.

Is it worth hiring a short film editor on Fiverr?

It can be, for a short with clean footage and a clear script. The 36 short film editing gigs on Fiverr's first results page start at $5 to $1,300, a median of $52.50, but a starting price only buys the seller's smallest package. Before ordering, check the footage limit, the revision rounds, whether grading and sound are included, and whether the portfolio shows a finished narrative short rather than only reels.

How long does it take to edit a short film?

About four to six weeks of post-production for most short films, according to Indie Shorts Mag's 2026 guide: the rough cut in weeks one and two, picture lock in week three, sound and color in week four, and final delivery in weeks five and six. A simple short with few notes can move faster. VFX shots, an original score or many review rounds stretch the schedule.

How much does a DCP cost for a short film?

About $99 to $300. Cinematiq charges $10 a minute of runtime with a $99 minimum for its instant DCP, so a 15-minute short costs $150, and $300 flat for a custom DCP of a short under 20 minutes. We Make Movies starts at $150 for shorts. Subtitles, 5.1 audio, encryption keys and rush delivery cost extra, so ask the festival for its technical specs first.

Should my editor also do the color grading and sound mix?

For a web release, usually yes. A good edit includes a balanced grade and a clean stereo mix at no extra line item. For a festival or theatrical run, a separate colorist and re-recording mixer are worth the money: XP-Pen puts a freelance short film grade at $500–$2,000, and one sound designer on Contra prices sound design and mix for a 1–20 minute short starting at $350. Lock the picture before either one starts.

Do I need a union editor for my short film?

No. Motion Picture Editors Guild scale applies to productions that sign a Guild agreement, and the lowest Low Budget Theatrical tier on its rate card covers features budgeted between $3.3 million and $6.875 million. Below that, the rate is negotiated between you and the editor. For a signatory feature in that tier, the 2026 minimum for an on-call editor is $2,668.33 a week.
