How YouTube timestamp links work

Share link
youtu.be/ID?t=150What the Share box's “Start at” option makes
Watch link
watch?v=ID&t=150sThe same start time on the full address
Embed
embed/ID?start=150Seconds, from the player documentation
Chapters
First at 0:00, 3 or moreEach at least 10 seconds

On a computer and on a phone

On a computer, YouTube's Share box has a “Start at” checkbox: tick it, type the time and copy the link. In the app, go to the moment, tap Share and turn on the “Minute : Second” toggle. Both give one link at a time. The generator makes a link for every time in your list at once, which is quicker for show notes, a course page or a list of highlights.

A link to a moment, or chapters in the video

A timestamp link starts one viewer at one moment. Chapters split the video itself into named parts on the progress bar, for everyone. They come from timestamps in the description, and YouTube only shows them when the first is 0:00, there are at least three in order, and each runs 10 seconds or more. Label your times here to get a chapters block, then run the whole description through the YouTube description checker before you publish.

Cutting highlights from a long recording? Our guide to turning a livestream into a video covers trimming, chapters and clips, and the YouTube upload checker tests the title, description, tags and chapters together.

How do I link to a specific time in a YouTube video?

Add the start time in seconds to the link with t=. For 2 minutes 30 seconds, use youtu.be/VIDEO_ID?t=150 or youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEO_ID&t=150s. On a computer, YouTube’s Share box has a “Start at” checkbox that does the same: tick it and type 2:30 before you copy the link.

How do I share a YouTube timestamp on my phone?

In the YouTube app, go to the moment you want, tap Share and turn on the “Minute : Second” toggle, as YouTube Help describes. Or paste the link here with the times you want and copy the generated links; they open at the right moment in the app and in a browser.

How do I start an embedded YouTube video at a set time?

Use start= in the embed address, in seconds: youtube.com/embed/VIDEO_ID?start=150 starts at 2:30. YouTube’s player documentation notes that the player jumps to the closest keyframe, so it can start a moment before the exact time.

Can I share a YouTube Short at a timestamp?

Paste the Shorts link and the generator builds the links on the regular video address (youtube.com/watch or youtu.be), which takes a start time. Test the link before you send it.

How do I turn timestamps into chapters?

Put a label after each time (like “2:30 The demo”) and the generator writes a chapters block to paste into the description. YouTube shows chapters when the first timestamp is 0:00, there are at least three in ascending order, and each chapter runs 10 seconds or more.

Is anything I paste sent anywhere?

No. The links are built in your browser. Use “Test it” to open a link and check it starts where you expect.
