Checks
Against YouTube's published title limit, as read on October 28, 2026.
Where your title gets cut off
Approximations of YouTube's layouts at two lines. The real cut depends on the screen, the window width and the language.
Clean copy
Extra spaces and invalid characters removed.
Compare title options
Two or three titles for the same video, side by side: the length, how much survives each cut and where the keyword above lands.

Where titles get cut off
The same title shows in very different widths: a wide search result on a laptop, the narrow Up next column beside the player, a phone feed. YouTube keeps two lines and cuts the rest, so a title that shows in full in search can lose its last third on a phone. The previews above draw your title in all three and say how many characters survive each cut. Put the main keyword and the reason to click before the first cut.
Comparing title options
Writing two or three versions? Put them in Compare title options above: each gets the same length, cut-off and keyword checks, side by side, so you can see which ones keep their main words in view on a phone. The checker doesn't guess which one people will click. For that, YouTube Studio's A/B Testing can run up to three titles on a published video and keeps the one with the most watch time.
How long the biggest channels make them
On the 97 most-subscribed YouTube channels, the median title on their latest long-form videos ran 58 characters, and 38% ran past 70 (our YouTube video length study, October 2026). Long titles work when the front of the title carries the meaning; nobody gets to read the end of a title that a phone has cut.
Then the rest of the upload
The YouTube description checker tests what viewers see before “Show more”, your hashtags and chapters, and the thumbnail checker previews the image beside the title. To check the title, description, tags and chapters in one pass, use the YouTube upload checker. For how titles fit into ranking in search and suggested videos, see our guide to YouTube SEO in 2026.

How long can a YouTube title be?
100 characters. YouTube Help says video titles have a character limit of 100 characters and can’t include invalid characters, and the YouTube Data API names them: the angle brackets < and >. Spaces, emoji and punctuation all count toward the 100.
How many characters of a YouTube title show?
It depends on where the title appears. YouTube shows titles at up to two lines and cuts the rest, so a wide desktop search result shows far more than the narrow Up next column or a phone feed. The checker draws your title in layouts close to all three and tells you how much of it shows in each.
Where should the keyword go in a YouTube title?
Near the start. Narrow layouts cut long titles at two lines, so words after about the first 60 characters can disappear on phones and in Up next. Put what people search for, and the reason to click, first.
Do hashtags in a YouTube title count?
Yes. YouTube lets you add hashtags to a title or a description, and they count toward the cap of 60 hashtags per video: above 60, YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video. Most creators keep hashtags in the description so the title stays readable.
Can I use emoji in a YouTube title?
Yes. YouTube only rejects the angle brackets < and >. Each emoji counts toward the 100 characters, so check the count if you use several.
How do I A/B test YouTube titles?
In YouTube Studio on a computer: open the video and click A/B Testing in the Title box. YouTube Help says you can test up to 3 titles, or titles with thumbnails, and when the test ends the one with the highest watch time is shown to all viewers. It needs advanced features turned on and doesn’t work on Shorts, Premieres, scheduled live streams, or videos that are made for kids, mature or private. Changing the title during a test stops it. Before you start one, compare the options here: each should keep its main words in view where titles get cut off.
Does this tool save my title?
No. The checks run in your browser and nothing you type is sent anywhere, so you can test a title before the video is public.
