YouTube thumbnail size and rules in 2026

YouTube raised its thumbnail spec in 2026. In March its help page moved the recommended size from 1280 × 720 to 3840 × 2160, and uploads from a computer can now be up to 50 MB instead of 2 MB. Here is what the help page says now.

Older guides still say 1280 × 720 and 2 MB

That was YouTube's guidance until March 2026, and a 1280 × 720 JPG still uploads. The difference now is headroom: a 4K file gives YouTube a sharper image for big screens such as TVs, and the 50 MB cap means you rarely have to crush a detailed design to fit. If you upload from your phone, the old 2 MB limit still applies there.

What the checker can't judge for you

Specs only get a thumbnail accepted. Whether people click is decided at small sizes, so use the squint test above: if the main words aren't readable at 168 pixels wide, cut words or make them bigger. Keep faces and text out of the bottom-right corner, where YouTube shows the video length, and flip to dark mode to check it there too.

Questions

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be in 2026?

YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels (16:9) for video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. For Shorts it recommends 2160 × 3840 (9:16), with a minimum height of 640 pixels.

What is the maximum file size for a YouTube thumbnail?

50 MB when you upload from YouTube Studio on a computer, and 2 MB from the YouTube mobile app (10 MB for podcast thumbnails on mobile). Until March 2026 the limit was 2 MB from any device. YouTube announced the larger limit on October 30, 2025, and its help page changed in March 2026.

Is 1280 × 720 still a good thumbnail size?

It still uploads, because it is above the 640-pixel minimum width. But YouTube now recommends 3840 × 2160 and serves 4K thumbnails from those larger files, so export at the bigger size if your design file allows it.

What file format should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube’s help page names JPG and PNG. JPG keeps photos small; PNG suits flat graphics and text. Either is safe.

Why does my Short show a different thumbnail on the Home feed?

On a vertical video, YouTube replaces a 16:9 custom thumbnail with an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on the Home, Explore and Subscriptions pages. Your custom thumbnail still appears on the watch feed and in watch history. Upload a 9:16 thumbnail for Shorts.

Why can’t I upload a custom thumbnail?

Custom thumbnails need a verified YouTube account. Custom Shorts thumbnails can only be added in YouTube Studio on a computer. YouTube also caps how many custom thumbnails a channel can upload per day; if you see “Daily custom thumbnail limit reached”, try again in 24 hours.

Does this tool upload my thumbnail anywhere?

No. Your browser reads the image and draws the previews itself. The file never leaves your device, so it is safe to check a thumbnail before the video is public.

Rather have Mark make it?
