YouTube's recommended upload settings in 2026

YouTube recommends H.264 in an MP4, at the bitrates below, with AAC-LC or Opus audio at 48 kHz. It says no bitrate limit is required and offers the bitrates for reference. The standard frame rates are 24, 25 and 30 fps; high frame rates are 48, 50 and 60.

How the checker reads your file

An MP4 or MOV file keeps an index, the moov atom, that lists every frame: its size, its timing and whether it is a keyframe. The checker reads that index on your device, in pieces, so a 50 GB ProRes file is checked as fast as a phone clip. Video bitrate is the size of the video track divided by its length, which is what YouTube's table means. Overall bitrate is the whole file divided by its length, so it also counts the audio and the container. The codec, profile, scan and entropy coding come from the codec's own settings in the file, and the color from its color tags. Before publishing it we checked it against ffprobe on 15 test files (H.264, HEVC, ProRes, HDR10, interlaced, variable frame rate, rotated phone video, 5.1 and Opus audio): the bitrates, frame rates, resolutions and codec details matched. Screen recorders and live tools often write a fragmented MP4, which spreads that index through the file in small fragments; the checker reads each fragment's own index, and in a recording with more than 1,200 fragments reads 12 runs of them spread through the file and estimates the length and bitrate from the share it read. WebM and MKV files keep their codec, frame size, color and length in a header at the start; the frame rate and video bitrate come from the timestamps and sizes of the frames in the first few megabytes, or the whole file when it is small. We checked the fragmented MP4, WebM and MKV reading against ffprobe on 10 more test files: frame rates, lengths and frame counts matched, and estimated bitrates were within 1%.

When the numbers don't match your export settings

Most exports use a variable bitrate, so the average the checker reports sits above or below the target you set, depending on how much motion and detail the video has. A static talking head or screen recording can average well under its target. If the video bitrate comes out well under YouTube's number, raise the target or switch to a quality-based setting. To see what a given bitrate means in file size, use the video file size calculator, and for how long it will take to send, the upload time calculator. Our guide to YouTube export settings walks through the export dialog itself. Making a vertical video? The YouTube Shorts checker says whether it will land as a Short.

What bitrate should I upload to YouTube?

YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 1080p at 24, 25 or 30 fps and 12 Mbps at 48, 50 or 60 fps; 35–45 Mbps for 4K at standard frame rates and 53–68 Mbps at high frame rates; 16 and 24 Mbps for 1440p; 5 and 7.5 Mbps for 720p. HDR uploads need more: 10 and 15 Mbps at 1080p, 44–56 and 66–85 Mbps in 4K. YouTube says no bitrate limit is required and gives these as recommendations.

How do I check a video’s bitrate?

Drop the file above. The checker reads the file’s index on your device and divides the size of the video track by its length, so you get the video bitrate, not just the overall rate. On Windows, a file’s Properties > Details tab also shows a data rate; on a Mac, QuickTime Player’s Movie Inspector shows it.

What frame rate should I upload to YouTube?

The frame rate you recorded at. YouTube lists 24, 25, 30, 48, 50 and 60 fps as common and says other rates are acceptable. Interlaced footage should be deinterlaced first: YouTube’s example is 1080i60 to 1080p30.

What codec and settings does YouTube recommend?

H.264 High Profile, progressive scan, CABAC, 4:2:0 chroma, two consecutive B-frames and a closed GOP of half the frame rate, in an MP4 with the moov atom at the front (Fast Start) and no edit lists. Audio: AAC-LC or Opus at 48 kHz, stereo or stereo plus 5.1, at 384 kbps for stereo.

What is the moov atom, and why put it at the front?

The moov atom is the index of an MP4 or MOV file: it says where every frame is. YouTube asks for it at the front of the file, which editors call Fast Start or “Web optimized”. If your file fails that check, ffmpeg can move it without re-encoding: ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c copy -movflags +faststart out.mp4.

What does YouTube need for HDR?

HDR metadata in the file: the PQ or HLG transfer function, Rec. 2020 color primaries and the Rec. 2020 non-constant luminance matrix, at 10 or 12 bits, from 720p to 2160p. YouTube recommends VP9 Profile 2, AV1 or HEVC for HDR, and says PQ videos should also carry SMPTE ST 2086 mastering metadata.

Is variable frame rate a problem for YouTube?

YouTube’s settings page doesn’t mention it; it asks for the frame rate you recorded at. Phones often record a variable frame rate. If the audio drifts or motion stutters after upload, export at a constant frame rate.

How do I check a video’s resolution and frame rate online?

Drop the file into the checker above. For MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV it reads the resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate (and whether it is constant), codec, bitrate, color and audio from the file itself, then compares each with YouTube’s recommended upload settings. Other formats show the frame size, length and overall bitrate your browser reports. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I see a video file’s metadata, like the codec and color profile?

Yes, for MP4 and MOV: the container, video codec and profile, bit depth and chroma subsampling, color primaries and transfer (SDR or HDR), and the audio codec, sample rate and channels, all read from the file’s headers on your device. WebM and MKV files give the same where their header carries it: the codec, frame size, color tags and audio.

How do I compress a video for YouTube without losing quality?

Export H.264 in an MP4 at about the bitrate YouTube recommends for your resolution and frame rate (8 Mbps for 1080p at 24–30 fps, 12 Mbps at 48–60 fps, 35–45 Mbps for 4K at standard frame rates) with Fast Start on. YouTube re-encodes every upload, so a file far above those numbers mostly costs upload time. Drop the export in the checker to confirm it matches.

Is my video uploaded anywhere?

No. The checker reads the file on your device in small pieces, so even a large file is checked without uploading it. Nothing is sent to us.
