How fast should a teleprompter scroll?
At the speed you talk. Most people read comfortably between 130 and 175 words a minute: about 150 is average conversational speech, a slow, dramatic read is closer to 130, and news presenters run at about 175. The prompter scrolls in words per minute, so the pace stays the same when you change the text size or line width. Each figure below is quoted from its source.
| Pace | Words a minute | Published as | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow, dramatic read | 130 | ~65 words in a 30-second script “at a slower, dramatic pace” | Voice123 |
| Conversational | 150 | “The average rate of speech for English speakers in the United States is about 150 words per minute” | National Center for Voice and Speech |
| Audiobook narration | 155 | “about 9,300 words equals one hour of finished audio” | ACX |
| Brisk, energetic ad read | 170 | ~85 words in a 30-second script “at a brisk or energetic pace” | Voice123 |
| News presenter | 175 | “News is normally presented at about 175WPM” | BBC Research & Development |
Setting up the screen
Put the text next to the lens. The closer the reading line is to the camera, the less your eyes drift. On a laptop, drag the window to the top of the screen under the webcam; with a phone or camera, put a tablet or monitor just below the lens. Narrow the lines so your eyes move less from side to side, and use mirror mode only with a beam-splitter rig, where the text reflects in angled glass in front of the lens.
Writing a script you can read naturally
Write the way you speak, one idea per line, with a blank line where you want to pause. Read it aloud once before you record and rewrite anything you trip over. For timing a script before you write it, use the script length calculator.

How fast should a teleprompter scroll?
At the pace you speak, usually 130 to 175 words a minute. The National Center for Voice and Speech puts average American English speech at about 150 words a minute, Voice123 times a slow, dramatic read at about 130 and a brisk ad read at about 170, and BBC Research & Development says news is normally presented at about 175. Start at 150, read a paragraph, then nudge the speed up or down with the arrow keys until you never wait for the text or chase it.
Is this teleprompter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no time limit, and it runs in any modern browser on a laptop, desktop, tablet or phone.
Is my script uploaded anywhere?
No. The script stays on this page. If your browser allows it, it is also saved in this browser’s local storage so it is still there when you come back; clear the box to remove it.
What does mirror mode do?
It flips the text left to right so it reads correctly when it is reflected in the angled glass of a teleprompter rig. Flip turns it upside down for rigs that need that too. On a plain screen next to your camera, leave both off.
Can I record video with it?
Not inside the page. Open the prompter on the screen you will look at, put it in full screen, and record with your camera, phone, OBS or your webcam app. Keep the text close to the lens and the lines short so your eyes move less.
What are the keyboard shortcuts?
Space starts and pauses, the up and down arrows change the speed by 10 words a minute, plus and minus change the text size, R goes back to the top, F toggles full screen and M toggles mirror mode. Clicking the text also starts and pauses it.
How long will my script take to read?
The word count and running time show under the script box at the pace you pick. For planning before you write, the script length calculator shows how many words fill a 30-second ad, a 1-minute Reel or a 10-minute video.
How do I look natural reading from a teleprompter?
Write the way you talk, break the script into short lines, and narrow the text so your eyes barely move. Place the screen as close to the lens as you can, set the pace a little slower than feels natural, and do one read-through before you record.
