Video upload time calculator

Upload time = file size × 8 ÷ upload speed: a 1 GB file takes about 6 minutes 40 seconds at 20 Mbps and 1 minute 20 seconds at 100 Mbps. Enter a file size, or a video's length and resolution, and your upload speed.

The upload figure from a speed test. 20 Mbps is the FCC's broadband benchmark.
Estimated upload time 13 min 20 sec

to upload 2.00 GB at 20 Mbps, at the full speed of your connection.

At half that speed, as on a busy Wi-Fi network: 26 min 40 sec.

Upload times for common file sizes

At the full upload speed of the connection, in decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB). The 20 Mbps column is the FCC's upload benchmark for high-speed broadband.

How to calculate upload time

Upload time (seconds) = file size (MB) × 8 ÷ upload speed (Mbps). Speeds are in bits and file sizes in bytes, and a byte is 8 bits. A 5 GB export at 50 Mbps is 5,000 × 8 ÷ 50 = 800 seconds, or 13 minutes 20 seconds. Don't know the file size yet? Switch to video length, or use the video file size calculator.

YouTube's limits and processing time

The largest file YouTube accepts is 256 GB or 12 hours, whichever is less (YouTube Help). After the upload, YouTube makes a low-quality version available first and processes HD and 4K afterwards; its help page says a 60-minute 4K video at 30 fps can take up to 4 hours to finish high-resolution processing (YouTube Help, read October 22, 2026). YouTube suggests uploading as unlisted and making the video public once all qualities are available (YouTube Help). Exporting at the right bitrate keeps files from growing past what the upload needs; our guide to YouTube export settings covers it.

How long does it take to upload 1 GB?

At 20 Mbps, the FCC’s broadband benchmark for upload speed, about 6 minutes 40 seconds; at 10 Mbps about 13 minutes 20 seconds; at 100 Mbps about 1 minute 20 seconds. Time in seconds = size in MB × 8 ÷ upload speed in Mbps, so 1,000 MB × 8 ÷ 20 = 400 seconds.

How long does it take to upload a 10-minute video to YouTube?

A 10-minute 1080p video at YouTube’s recommended 8 Mbps bitrate is about 629 MB, which takes about 4 minutes 12 seconds to upload at 20 Mbps and about 50 seconds at 100 Mbps. A 4K version at 35–45 Mbps is four to five times bigger and takes four to five times as long. YouTube then needs extra time to process the HD and 4K versions.

How long does YouTube take to process a video after the upload?

It varies with length, frame rate, quality and traffic. YouTube makes a low-quality version available first; higher qualities can take several hours. Its help page says a 60-minute 4K video at 30 fps can take up to 4 hours to finish high-resolution processing, and 60 fps takes longer.

What is a good upload speed for video?

The FCC’s benchmark for high-speed fixed broadband, raised in March 2024, is 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload. At 20 Mbps a 1 GB file takes under 7 minutes. Upload speeds are usually lower than download speeds (the benchmark itself is 100 down and 20 up), so check the upload number in a speed test, not the download one.

What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?

Internet speeds are in megabits per second (Mbps); file sizes are in megabytes (MB). A byte is 8 bits, so divide Mbps by 8 to get MB per second: a 20 Mbps upload moves about 2.5 MB a second.

Why is my upload slower than the calculator says?

The calculator assumes your connection’s full upload speed for the whole transfer. Wi-Fi distance, other devices using the connection, the router and the server you’re uploading to all take a share, which is why the result also shows the time at half speed.
