Why 9:16, at 1080 × 1920

TikTok shows video full screen on a phone held upright, so a 9:16 frame fills it and 1:1 or 16:9 shows with bars. TikTok's own video specs list 9:16 as recommended with a minimum of 540 × 960; exporting at 1080 × 1920 gives TikTok twice that to work with. Captions and buttons cover the edges of the frame, so check where with the safe zone checker.

About the length limit

TikTok's developer guide says every creator can post 3-minute videos and some have access to 5- or 10-minute videos. You'll see longer limits quoted elsewhere, but TikTok's pages above don't publish one, so the checker tells you when a video is over 10 minutes and leaves the final word to the app.

Posting the same clip to YouTube and Instagram too? The YouTube Shorts checker and the Instagram Reels checker run each platform's own rules.

How it reads your video

Your browser reads each MP4 or MOV file in slices, so even a multi-gigabyte video is never loaded whole: the moov box at the start or end of the file holds its length, frame size, frame rate and codec, and the rotation flag a phone writes says which way up the frame plays. Other formats go through the browser's own player. The video never leaves your device. Each value is checked against TikTok's own pages listed above, read on the date shown.

What size should a TikTok video be?

Vertical 9:16. TikTok’s video specs list 9:16 (recommended, at least 540 × 960), 1:1 (at least 640 × 640) and 16:9 (at least 960 × 540), and only 9:16 fills a phone screen. TikTok’s developer guide allows 360 to 4,096 pixels on each side.

How long can a TikTok video be?

TikTok’s developer guide says every creator can post 3-minute videos, while some have access to 5-minute or 10-minute videos. TikTok doesn’t publish a longer in-app limit on those pages, so if your video is over 10 minutes, check in the app whether your account can post it.

What is the maximum file size for a TikTok video?

4 GB in TikTok’s developer guide, which sets the limits for videos sent to TikTok by apps and tools. TikTok’s ad specs cap in-feed ad videos at 500 MB.

Which formats and codecs does TikTok accept?

MP4 (recommended), MOV and WebM, encoded with H.264 (recommended), H.265, VP8 or VP9, at 23 to 60 frames per second, according to TikTok’s developer guide.

Does this tool upload my video?

No. The checker reads the file on your device and nothing is uploaded, so you can check a video before anyone sees it.
