Timecode calculator

Add or subtract timecodes, find the duration between two, and convert between timecode, frames and seconds at every common frame rate, with drop-frame counted the SMPTE way.

Type 01:02:03:04, 01;02;03;04 or just 01020304. Drop-frame results use a semicolon before the frames.
Result 01:00:10:00

Drop-frame skips frame labels, not frames: the count stays in step with the clock.

How timecode counts at each frame rate

24, 25, 30, 50, 60 fps
Whole frames every secondAn hour is 86,400, 90,000, 108,000, 180,000 or 216,000 frames
29.97 drop-frame
Skips labels 00 and 01At every minute but each tenth: 107,892 frames an hour
59.94 drop-frame
Skips labels 00 to 03At every minute but each tenth: 215,784 frames an hour
23.976 and non-drop
Run 0.1% slow against the clock3.6 seconds an hour: 01:00:00:00 plays in 3,603.6 s

Drop-frame, by example

At 29.97 fps drop-frame the frame after 00:00:59;29 is 00:01:00;02: labels 00 and 01 are skipped. At 00:09:59;29 the next frame is 00:10:00;00, because every tenth minute keeps them. That keeps the timecode within about two frames of the clock (an hour of it ends 3.6 milliseconds early), which is why broadcast deliveries at 29.97 use it. Type 00:01:00;00 at 29.97 drop-frame and the calculator tells you it doesn't exist.

Frames, timecode and real seconds

Timecode counts frames, not seconds. At 23.976, 29.97 and 59.94 fps each frame lasts a little longer than its label suggests, so the calculator shows both the frame count and the real duration. For editing, that difference decides whether a 30-minute show actually fits a 30-minute slot. To work out how long an edit takes rather than how long it runs, the video editing time calculator has the published editing ratios, and the video bitrate checker reads a file's real frame rate if you're not sure which one you have.

What is drop-frame timecode?

Timecode for 29.97 and 59.94 fps video that skips frame numbers so the count keeps up with the clock. At 29.97 fps, frame numbers 00 and 01 are skipped at the start of every minute except each tenth minute; at 59.94 fps, 00 to 03 are. No video frames are dropped, only their labels, and drop-frame timecode is written with a semicolon before the frames: 00:01:00;02.

How many frames are in an hour of 29.97 drop-frame timecode?

107,892. One hour of non-drop timecode counts 108,000 frames (60 × 60 × 30), and drop-frame skips 2 labels in 54 of the 60 minutes, 108 in all. So 01:00:00;00 is frame 107,892, which plays in 3,599.996 seconds of real time.

How do I convert frames to timecode?

Divide by the frame rate. At 24 fps, 1,000 frames is 41 seconds and 16 frames, or 00:00:41:16. Drop-frame needs the skipped labels added back, which is what the calculator does: at 29.97 drop-frame, frame 1,800 is 00:01:00;02, not 00:01:00;00.

Why does my timecode not match the clock?

Non-drop timecode at 29.97 fps counts 30 labels a second while the video plays 29.97 frames, so it falls behind real time by 3.6 seconds an hour (108 frames). Drop-frame timecode exists to fix that. At 23.976 fps the same 0.1% difference applies, and there is no drop-frame version, so an hour of 23.976 timecode plays in 3,603.6 seconds.

Should I use drop-frame or non-drop-frame?

Use drop-frame for 29.97 or 59.94 fps work that must match real durations, such as broadcast and timed deliveries. Use non-drop for everything else, including 23.976, 24, 25, 30 and 60 fps, where drop-frame doesn’t exist, and for film-based projects. Keep one choice for a whole project.

Does this calculator save what I type?

No. It runs in your browser and nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
