The tallest feed post is now 3:4
Instagram's help page says it keeps photos between 1.91:1 and 3:4 at their original resolution up to 1,080 px wide, a height of 566 to 1,440 pixels. So 1080 × 1440 is the tallest post that isn't cropped, taller than the 4:5 (1080 × 1350) that was the limit for years. Scheduling and publishing tools go through Meta's API, which still takes 4:5 to 1.91:1, so if you schedule posts, 4:5 is the safe tallest size.
Carousels: one shape for every slide
A carousel takes up to 20 photos and videos, and the orientation you choose applies to all of them, so an image in a different shape gets cropped to match. Export every slide at one size, 1080 × 1350 for example, and switch the checker to Carousel to test the set together. Designing the slides? What size should an Instagram post be in 2026?
1080 pixels wide, between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Instagram keeps photos in that range at up to 1,080 px wide without cropping, so 1080 × 1080 (square), 1080 × 1350 (4:5) and 1080 × 1440 (3:4, the tallest) all fit. If you post through a scheduling tool, stay at 4:5 or wider: Meta’s publishing API accepts 4:5 to 1.91:1.
Why does Instagram crop my photo?
Because its shape is outside the range Instagram keeps. A photo taller than 3:4 is cropped to 3:4, and one wider than 1.91:1 is cropped to 1.91:1. The checker shades the part that gets cut.
What is the best size for an Instagram carousel?
The same as a single post, and the same for every slide. Instagram applies the orientation you choose (square, portrait or landscape) to every photo and video in a carousel, so mixed shapes get cropped. A carousel holds up to 20 photos and videos.
What size is an Instagram story?
9:16, which is 1080 × 1920 at 1,080 px wide. Meta recommends 9:16 for stories to avoid cropping or blank space.
What size is an Instagram Reels cover?
Instagram recommends 420 × 654 pixels, a 1:1.55 ratio. You can’t edit the cover after the reel is posted, so check it first.
Does Instagram lower the quality of my photos?
It sizes photos wider than 1,080 px down to 1,080 px, and enlarges photos narrower than 320 px to 320 px. Upload at exactly 1,080 px wide and nothing is resized.
